Black canvas

My favorite way to photograph fireworks is zoomed in: A telephoto lens and a longer exposure reveal details, forms and motions that are usually either too far away or too quick to spot. The results are abstractions on an inky-black canvas, scenes that seem celestial, microscopic, aquatic all at once. From this perspective, the night sky around July 4 fills with strange sea creatures and galaxies. That’s the good stuff.
